The ways we are empowered when it comes to pollution are:
1. Economic – we can choose to spend our $ differently

2. Political – we can be vocal enough to have power and change things

3. Media – we can spread the word and get media coverage to change something

4. Census – we can use the census to gain a better understanding of our population
What is hypoxia?
Very low oxygen concentration
What is the term for very low oxygen concentration?
Hypoxia
What are some examples of particulates and what is the main source?
Soot, asbestos

The main sources are transportation and industrial processes
What is the difference between oligotrophic and eutrophic lake?
Oligotrophic Lake –Low in dissolved nutrients; deep, clear, has plants and soil

Eutrophic Lake – High-nutrient, low-oxygen, shallow and warm
What were causing mutations in frogs in Michigan waters?
Chemicals and pesticides
What are CFCs and what is the concern?
A family of chemicals used in refrigeration, air conditioning, packaging, insulation, or as solvents and aerosol propellants.

Because CFC's are not destroyed in the lower atmosphere they drift into the upper atmosphere where their chlorine components destroy the earth's protective ozone layer
What are the three steps of water treatment?
Preliminary Treatment – When treating sewage, large debris is screened out through grates

Primary Treatment – Water sits for a period of time to filter and settle

Secondary Treatment – Bacteria is added. It feeds of the waste; it is now “active sludge”. Nutrients are not removed.
What happened in Milwaukee in 1993?
There was a cryptosporidium outbreak: A disease-causing parasite, resistant to chlorine disinfection. It may be found in fecal matter or contaminated drinking water. Milwaukee had a crypto outbreak caused by sewage contamination.
What is resurgence?
A population explosion due to poisoning the natural enemy that would normally eat the pests
What is "systemic"?
Part of the plant. For example, if hormones or pesticides in a fruit or vegetable were systemic, you would not be able to wash it off with water.
What is a Secondary Pest Outbreak?
After a period of time growers encountered difficulties in connection with the use of pesticides. Many pests started to show signs of resistance to the chemicals. As time went on it took more frequent spraying with heavier doses to control these pests. In some cases the pests became so resistant that they could no longer be successfully controlled by that particular pesticide. Next, growers started to see pests that they had never encountered before. This phenomenon was termed a secondary pest outbreak. An insect or mite that was previously at very low population levels now occurred in epidemic numbers because a pesticide used against another pest species killed the agents that kept this ‘secondary pest’ at low population levels. Another related problem that emerged was environmental contamination as a result of the use of some pesticides.
What is the pesticide treadmill?
A farmer has pests so he uses pesticides on his crops. Over time, these pests grow resistant to the pesticide so the farmer needs to add more pesticides. The cycle continues.
What is photochemical smog?
brown-air smog formed by light0driven chemical reactions of primary pollutants and normal atmospheric compounds that produce a mix of over 100 different chemicals. Hot, sunny windless days in urban areas provide perfect conditions for formation of this type of smog. Health concerns: can irritate eyes, noses, and throats. Nitric oxide is a key element of this type of smog.
What causes photochemical smog?

What are the health effects?
Burning fossil fuels and coal power plants

Health concerns: can irritate eyes, noses, and throats.
What is Ozone gas?

What are the health effects?
A colorless gas, a secondary pollutant created by the interaction of sunlight, heat, nitrogen oxides, and volatile carbon-containing materials. Ozone gas can injure living tissues and cause respiratory problems.
Is Ozone gas a primary or secondary pollutant?
A secondary pollutant
