What do ecologists study?
Populations communities and Ecosystems
What is study of populations?
Determination of Population size controlling distribution and abundance of organisms
What is a community?
A Group of organisms of many different species which acquire energy different ways and might live in some sort of pattern together
What is an ecosystem?
Communities and cycling of nutrients and other materials
What is an Autotroph and Heterotroph
Auto-organsims that are photosynthetic/chemosynthetic
Hetero--organsims that feed on plants and other animals
What are categories referred as?

Give some examples...
Trophic levels: Producers, herbivores, carnivores, decomposers
what is a producer?
photosynthetic organisms that get their enrgy from the sun and chemosynthetic organisms that get their energy from oxidation of inorganic molecules such as ammonia and nitrite
what is the light/dark rxns?
Light--when energy is storeed in ATP and NADPH2

Dark--inorganic material such as carbon dioxide is reduced by ATP and NADPH2

Energy of sun is stored in the bonds of C and H
2 examples of aquatic herbivores:
Zooplankton and Benthic
What is Benthic?
benthic organisms are in the sediments in the bottom of an aquatic ecosystem. many of the benthic organisms are called DETRITOVORES b/c they consume organic debris from autotrophic layers higher in the water column.
What 3 things may happen to organic matter?
some is egested (not digested):
3 fates,
1. some is consumed by carnivores in the 3rd trophic level
2. some is oxidized in respiration
3. some is lost in the decomposition when an animal dies
Give some examples of Carnivores both in aquatic and terrestrial enviornments
Aquatic: 3rd level-minnows and sunfish; 4th level-Bass pike salmon marlin swordfish and sharks

Terrestrial: 3rd level- lions cougars and dog type organisms
What do decomposers do? Examples?
Break down organic matter and release the nutes

Ex:bacteria and fungi
What are 2 characteristic of all organisms?
Metabolism and Mortality
How much energy is transfered to the next trophic level and what happens to it?
10% to the next level directly
Ex carnivores only receive 1% from producers.
Most of the energy is lost through metabolism
