What is illness perception?

Organised cognitive thoughts or beliefs that patients have about their illness

A way to understand the interaction between genetics and the environment in causing mental illness. People inherit a tendency towards a mental disorder - diatheses - which is acted upon by enviornmental stimuli - stress - to cause a disorder to appear.
