What does the word echinoderm mean? |
A marine invertebrate of the phylum Echinodermata, such as a starfish, sea urchin, or sea cucumber. |
What type of symmetry do the echinoderms have? |
Possess pentaradial, or five-sided symmetry. |
What is the function of the madroporite? |
An essential part of the circulation system in echinoderms, the echinoderm draws in sea water to fuel its water vascular system. |
What is the function of the ampulla? |
Bulblike structure at the top of each tube foot, used in movement. |
What is unique about the sea stars genders? |
Starfish are not hermaphrodites (animals which have characteristics of both genders) but they are capable of changing the gender whenever they like during their lifetime. |
What do sea stars eat? |
A sea star's diet can include: barnacles, snails, sea urchins, clams, and mussels. |
What do brittle stars eat? |
Brittle stars are mainly detrivores (detritus-eaters); they eat decaying matter and plankton. |
Describe the side of the sea star that has the mouth. |
The side that has a mouth is known to be the oral side of the sea star. |
What type of waste do sea stars expel? |
Stars, are filter feeders and feed on phytoplankton, a small intestine runs from the secondary stomach to the external port (where the sea star disposes waste) which is located in the central upper part of the body. |
What is the Hemal system for? |
There are hemal channels forming rings around the central part of the body around the mouth, they are all connected by the axial sinus. |
What is the function of pedicellariae? |
They are thought to keep the body surface clear of algae, encrusting organisms, and other debris in conjunction with the ciliated epidermis present in all echinoderms. |
What class do basket stars belong to? |
Brittle star |
What structure do sea stars use for locomotion? |
Topics relating to locomotion include function of the madreporite, considered here, and TUBE FEET, ARM NUMBER, and RIGHTING RESPONSE, considered in their own sections. |
What class do sea cucumbers belong to? |
Class Holothuroidea. |
What creatures belong in the echinodea class? |
Notably certain Sea Urchins. |
Which echinoderm contains venom that may be deadly to humans? |
The venomous forms of echinoderms are confined only to the sea urchins and Crown of thorns starfish. |
What fluid is located in the vascular system of echinoderms? |
The water vascular system is a hydraulic system used by echinoderms, such as sea stars and sea urchins, for locomotion, food and waste transportation, and respiration |
What class has toxins that discourage predators? |
The Anthozoa class includes sea anemones, hard corals, soft corals and sea pens. |
What structure do sea cucumbers use to breathe? |
Sea cucumbers breathe via their anus. |
What class do sea lilies belong to? |
Class Crinoidea. |
What are the most primitive class of echinoderms? |
Crinoidea. |
Attached crinoids are called? |
Crinoids, in their adult form, are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk are commonly called sea lilies. |
