Undertow

another term for rip current, used in the incorrect belief that rip currents drag swimmers below the surface.

Long Shore Current

A long shore current is an ocean current that moves parallel to shore. It is caused by large swells sweeping into the shoreline at an angle and pushing water down the length of the beach in one direction.

A swell, in the context of an ocean, sea or lake, is a series of mechanical waves that propagate along the interface between water and air and so they are often referred to as surface gravity waves.
