What are the Four major layers of the earth?
crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
What is the thinnest layer?
the crust
What is the thickest layer?
the mantle
What is the hottest layer?
the inner core
What rock makes up the oceanic crust?
basalt
What rock makes up the continental crust?
granite
Which crust is thicker the oceanic or continental?
continental
Describe the lithosphere?
It is the upper part of the mantle. It is 100km thick and is attached to the crust and floats on top of the asthenosphere.
Describe the asthenoshere?
This is the softest layer of the mantle under the lithosphere. 1,000 degrees C. It bends like palstic and flows slowly.
What happens when you go deeper into the mantle?
The pressure increases and it gets much hotter
What is the core made of?
nickle and iron(metal)
What is the size of the core?
about 3,486km thick and slightly smaller than the moon
Describe the outer core?
It is a layer of thick liquid that is under great pressure.
Describe the inner core?
It is a layer of solid metal under so much pressure that it became a solid.
What types of rock make up the crust?
igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
