Theory-X leaders demonstrate an orientation that reflects a more pessimistic view of followers, and rely heavily on coercive external control methods (disciplinary, punishment, threats, etc.) to motivate followers. Theory-Y leaders demonstrate an orientation that reflects a more optimistic view of followers, and believe followers are more motivated by having more satisfying and rewarding work tasks.

2. Theory X vs. Theory Y

Golem effect occurs when leaders who have little confidence in their followers' ability to accomplish goals, will likely experience a self-fulfilling prophecy of defeat. The Pygmalion effect occurs when leaders articulate high expectations for followers and teams that lead possibly to higher performance.

3. Golem Effect vs. Pygamalion Effect

In mentoring, over a period of time, a relationship is developed where one person, who is ahead of another person, in terms of skills, knowledge, or understanding, shares these talents in order that the one being mentored has an opportunity of contributing positively to an organization or team. Coaching means to be competent in giving feedback, acting as a sounding board, provide the right kind of developmental assignments, and providing encouragement and reinforcement for learning to an individual(s) who already have knowledge of what to do.

4. Mentoring vs. Coaching

A mentoring technique that emphasizes closing the distance between what a leader knows, and what they need to know, in order to gain new skills and information.

5. Gaps Analysis

Satisfaction is how much a follower likes a specific job or activity. Motivation is anything that provides direction, intensity, and persistence to enhance a desired behavior.
