Most universal normal flora among humans and a number of other animals. Caused by 4 different groups of e. Coli.

Escherichia coli, gastroenteritis

Common cause of traveller's diarrhea and diarrhea in infants. Have adhesins that allow bacteria to colonize intestinal epithelium, where toxins are secreted. Toxins are similar to cholera toxin.

Enterotoxogenic escherichia coli

Common cause of diarrhea outbreaks in hospital nurseries. Can cause chronic diarrhea in infants. Has adhesins (coded for by plasmas). Causes loss of microvilli and cell surface thickening at the site of attachment.

Enteropathogenic escherichia coli

Commonly known as e coli O157-H7. Causes severe illness and bloody diarrhea. Produce toxins that cause death of interstinal epithelium by blocking protein synthesis. 2-7% lead to lysis of rbc's and kidney failure. Fatalities common in infants and the elderly.

Enterohemorrhagic escherichia coli
