What test do you use to screen for lipid disorders?
Nonfasting total cholesterol + HDL-C
What values are considered abnormal on the screening test for lipid disorders?
Total cholesterol > 240
HDL-C < 40
If the screening test for dyslipidemia is positive, what follow-up test do you order?
Fasting lipid levels. Fasting lets you calculate the VLDL, LDL, and IDL level.
At what age do you start screening for lipid disorders?
If patient has no risk factors:
Men at 35
Women at 45

If patient has coronary artery disease or CAD risk factors, you can start as early as 20.
What are the coronary artery disease risk factors (there are 5)?
1. Smoking
2. HTN or on anti-HTN meds
3. Low HDL (< 40)
4. Patient's age (men ≥ 45, women ≥ 55)
5. Family History of premature coronary artery disease (premature means a 1st degree male relative w/ disease before age 55 or a 1st degree female before age 65)
