The Shang dynasty's writing system was sophisticated with about 5,00 0 pictograms. It was written on bamboo first then rice paper, silk, and many other materials. It was thought for nobles to hire private tutors for five or so children in the upper class. People also in the upper class wrote on oracle bone to predict one's future. The only people who could write in the dynasty were the priests. In chinese writing, everyone was able to read chinese writing without being able to speak it.
Many achievements and inventions were made during the Shang dynasty. First, chopsticks were invented and it changed the way people in the dynasty ate. Bronze was also invented and was mostly used for tolls and weapons. It was also featured in art and pottery. Last, jade was invented and was used in art, pottery, and was a good material for artisans. Some clothing was also made with jade. The Shang dynasty also advanced in medicine, agriculture, textile, manufacturing, and skilled trading.
The Shang dynasty had a variety of food sources they ate. They ate raised pig and chicken as their protein. As their carbs, they ate millet, rice, wheat and barley. Side courses were fruits, vegetables, and nuts such as apricots and chestnuts. Shang people basically ate any thing farmers grew. One cool fact about Shang dynasty food is that chinese cuisine was said to have originated during the Shang dynasty.

At about 1766 B.C.E. Cheng Tang, otherwise known as Shang Tang overthrew the Xia family king, became king, and earned the name King Tang. (do headphone act) (Nicole speaks) During Tang's rule, agriculture was progressive and territory expanded West. (Nicole speaks) During the first 5 years of his reign, there were several droughts.
