What does a Compressor do?

Compresses the space between a sounds lowest dynamic range and its highest dynamic range

What are the main controls on a Compressor?

Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Make-Up, Output

What does each of the main controls affect?

Threshold: The maximum and minimum that the sound has to be before it is compressed

Ratio: How much of this compression is applied to the sound

Attack: How quickly the compression affects the sound

Make-Up: Allows the sound of compression to be boosted

Output: Gives control to how much of compression is boosted

What does a Noise Gate do?

Controls the volume output of a sound, allows you to cut sounds that you don't like

Why is a Compressor useful?

Reduces clipping and gives a punchier sound

What controls does a Noise Gate have?

Threshold, Release, Attack, Hold, Range

What type of tracks usually feature Noise Gates?

Vocal tracks, drum tracks, guitar tracks, any track that is recorded with a microphone and can pickup unwanted sound

Why are Dynamic Processors called Dynamic Processors?

Because they process sound dynamics, meaning volume

Why is a Noise Gate very useful?

Can reduce and get rid of unnecessary background noise on recordings

What is a Limiter?

Similar to a compressor as it reduces dynamic range
