What is a Compressor?

A device used to reduces the dynamics of a signal; is used to help even out drastic changes in levels.

What is a Noise Gate?

A Device that turns off the signal input into it unless the amplitude of the signal exceeds the set threshold.

What is a Limiter?

A Compressor that has a set max level, so the signal is compressed below that. Commonly used for amps and speaker protection.

Threshold

Attack

Release

What is the Threshold?

An a adjustable value of a point , which after being passed the device starts to work.

What is a Attack and Release?

Attack: The time for changed to be applied (in milliseconds)

Release: The time for changes to stop being applied (in milliseconds)

What is Output Gain?

Also known as Makeup gain. It's an amplifier for the compressed signal to bring it back up to a desired level.

What is the Ratio?

Ratio is the value of the relationship of how the signal is compressed after it exceeds the threshold. a 5:1 ratio would mean that for every 5 dB over the threshold the signal would be ducked by 1 dB.

What is key input?

It's the option on a Compressor (used for sidechaining) where a secondary input signal can be used to compress the primary signal accordingly.

What is an Expander?

A Device used to widen the dynamics of a (previously compressed) signal.
