Faults
a break in the earth's crust along which movement has occurred.
Anticline
an upward fold in a rock
Fracture
A break in a rock
Syncline
A downward fold in a rock
Dip-Slip Faults
Movement along dip-slip faults is vertical; one side moves up and the other side moves down
Hanging Wall
The rock surface that is immediately above the fault.
Miners and prospectors would hang their lanterns on the hanging wall. |
Footwall
The rock surface below the hanging wall.
Miners and prospectors would walk on the rocks below the mineralized fault zone, known as the footwall. |
Normal dip-slip faults
When the hanging wall block moves down and the footwall moves up. Most normal faults have steep dips of about 60º.
Reverse faults
The hanging wall block moves up and over the footwall. Reverse faults have dips greater than 45º.
Thrust Faults
The hanging wall block moves up and the over the footwall. Thrust faults have dips less than 45º.
Strike-slip fault
A fault along which the movement is horizontal. Because of their large size and linear nature, they can be visible over a great distance.
Transform fault
A special kind of strike-slip fault that cut through the lithosphere and allow motion between two large crustal plates.
