What does Ca do in the Action Potential?
Potentiate its length and proportionately effect the strength of contraction
How does Ca cause contraction in the heart?
A small amount enters via membrane Ca channel

It binds Ca channels on the SR causing a massive release of Ca = contraction

Reuptake is via Ca pump on SR and Ca/Na exchanger
What is Adrenaline's effect on the heart and how does it do it?
Increases Ca stores via G-protein leading to increased activity of membrane Ca channel and SR Ca pump.

Thus when contraction - higher amount of Ca release, stronger contraction
What are Glycoside's effect on the heart and how do they do it?
Block the Ca/Na exchanger, increasing intracellular Ca thus more goes into SR store.

Thus when contraction - higher amount of Ca release, stronger contraction
How do Ca Channel blockers effect the heart?
Decrease Ca, decrease force
How does smooth muscle differ from cardiac/skeletal muscle?
Doesn't have troponin or tropomyosin.

Ca bind Calmodulin instead which binds MLCK which phosphorylate myosin, activating it
What 8 drug groups can be used to treat Hypertension?
Decrease CO
Ca channel blockers
Beta 1 antagonist

Decrease Blood Volume or Resistance:
alpha 1 antagonists
alpha 2 agonist
Diurectics
Vasodilators
ACE inhibitors
Angiotensin II inhibitors
Give an example of a Ca Channel Blocker:
Nimodipine
Amlodipine
Mibefradil
Give an example of a Vasodilator:
Hydralazine
Minoxidil
Indapamide
Give an example of a Beta 1 antagonist:
Metaprolol
Atenolol
Which drugs improve the prognosis of Ischaemica Heart Disease?
Statins
ACE inhibitors
Beta 1 antagonists
Aspirin
Which drugs improve the symptoms of Ischaemic Heart Disease?
Nitrates
Beta 1 antagonists
Ca Channel Blockers
