1. Reduction of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation.

3. Inherited or acquired bleeding disorders

Naproxen - common indications
1. Ankylosing Spondylitis (chronic inflammatory arthritis that may lead to fusing of vertebrae) , osteoarthritis (degradation of joints), rheumatoid disorders including juvenile RA (rheumatoid arthritis)

2. Mild to moderate pain, fever

3. Menstrual cramps
Naproxen - usual dosing
1. Migraine: PO 500-750mg initially, additional 250-500mg PRN

Max 1250mg in 24 hrs

2. Pain, menstrual cramp: PO 500-750mg STAT, then 250mg q 6-8hr

Max 1250mg in 24 hrs

3. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis: PO 500-1000mg qday in 2 divided doses

4. OTC pain/fever relief: PO 200mg q 8-12hr, PRN 400mg STAT OK, MAX 600mg in 24 hrs
Naproxen - absolute contraindications
1. Hypersensitivity to naproxen, aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAIDs

2. Do not use on patients with bronchospasm, asthma, hives, or stuffy nose
Naproxen - major side effects
1. Cardiovascular edema, palpitation (awareness of abnormal heartbeat)

2. Small purple discolorations on skin

3. NVDRH

4. Hemolysis (rupture of RBCs), anemia (decrease in normal RBC #)
Diphenhydramine - brand names
Benadryl, Pediacare, Unisom, Theraflu
Diphenhydramine - therapeutic category
Histamine H1 antagonist, first generation
Diphenhydramine - common indications
1. Reduce itchy, water eyes; sneezing; or runny nose caused by hay fever, allergies, or common cold.

2. Reduce coughing

3. Nightime sleep aid

4. Prevention of motion sickness

5. Topically for relief of pain or itch from bug bites, minor cuts and burns, or rashes due to posion ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac.
Diphenhydramine - absolute contraindications
1. Hypersensitivity to diphenhydramine

2. Acute asthma

3. Neonates or premature infants

4. Breast-feeding


Do not give to children under 4!

1. Allergic reactions or motion sickness: PO 25-50mg q 6-8hrs; 100mg per dose PRN, Max 400mg per day

2. Antitussive (cough suppressant): PO 25mg q 4hrs, Max 150mg/24 hrs

3. Nighttime sleep aid: PO 50mg hs

1. Low BP, palpitations, tachycardia (above normal heart rate)

2. Restlessness in children

3. Difficult or painful urination
