Nitroglycerin (nitrostat, nitrobid) organic nitrate

Thera: antiangina drug


Pharma: organic nitrate, vasodilator


MA: oldest, most widely used organic nitrate. Various routes. Taken before physical activity or acute angina episode. Transdermal and oral sustained-release from are only for prophylaxis.

Atenolol ( tenormin) beta-blocker

Thera: druf for angina, HTN, or MI


Pharma: beta-adrenergic blocker


MA: most frequently prescribed drug in U.S bc safe and effective in HF, HTN, stable angina and MI. Blocks selectively beta1 receptors in heart. Angina: slows heart rate and reduce contractility, which lowers myocaedial o2 demand. Taking once a day.

Diltiazem (cardizem, cartia XT, dilacor XR) calcium channel blocker

Thera: drug for angina and HTN


Pharma: calcium channel blocker


MA: inhibit transport of calcium ions into myocardial cells. Relaxes both coronary and peripheral blood vessels. Useful in treatment of atrial dysrhythmias and HTN as well as angina.

Reteplase (retavase) thrombolytics

Thera: drug for dissolving clots


Pharma: thrombolytic


MA: most effective @30 mins, but not later than 12 hours of onset MI symptoms. After clots dissolves, therapy with hepanin (or orther anticoagulant ) is started to prevent other clots. Adverse effect: hemorrhage.
