Class

Adsorbent and antidote

Action

Absorbs drugs and chemicals in the stomach, which prevents their absorption into the systemic circulation. Charcoal is then eliminated in the feces with the absorbed substances

Indications

Poisoning by ingestion, medication OD

Contraindications

Ingestion of caustics, corrosives, petroleum distillates
GI bleeding

Precautions

Different charcoal preparations have varying capacities for absorption. Does not absorb all drugs and toxic substances

Side effects

Activated charcoal may indirectly induce nausea vomiting

Dose

30-100g (1-2g/kg)

Pediatric dose

10-30g (1g/kg)
Infant 1g/kg

Administration

Prepared in a slurry and administered by mouth or slowly via oro/nasogastric tube
