ASPRIN
-Use: NSAID eff. for tx of fever, pain, inflamation, & prevent blood clotting.
-Dental Concerns: Control of bleeding after perio debridement(scaling) or surgical procedures.

LOVASTATIN
(Altoprev/Lotrel/Mevacor)
-Use: prevention of coronary artery disease, high cholesterol
-Dental Concerns: xerostomia; avoid alcohol based mouth rinse.
-Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precaution: none
-Side Effects: Headache; GI upset. Occasional - nausea; vomiting; constipation. Rare - dizziness.
-Contraindications: active liver disease; pregnancy; breast feeding.
SERTRALINE
-Use: Anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, post-traumatic disorder, major depression.
-Dental Concerns: Xerostomia; Bruxism or involuntary muscle movement; may inhibit other drugs(erythromycin/ clarithromycin); avoid light in pt. eyes, use dark glasses; slowly sit-up; semisupine b/c GI effects.
-Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precaution: none
-Bleeding Effect: may increase risk of bleeding event when used with aspririn, NSAIDS, other anticoagulants.
-Side Effects: headache, nausea, insomnia, GI upset, dry mouth
-Contraindications: caution in elderly, epilepsy
TOPROL-XL
(LOPRESSOR/Metaprolol)
-Use: mild to moderate hypertension; post tx acute MI to prevent sudden death; ventricular arrhythmias; atrial fibrillation; migraine prophylaxis
-Dental Concerns: monitor; supine; salivary flow; xerostomia; stress; short appt.
-Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precaution: use vasoconstrictors w/caution; avoid retraction cord soaked in epinephrine.
-Side Effects: drowsiness; fatigue. Occasional - anxiety; GI upset.
-Contraindications: MI pt. w/ heart rate less than 45bpm or BP systolic less than 100mmHg
FOSAMAX
(Alendronate)
-Use: Tx of osteoporosis or Paget's Disease (abnormal bone formation).
-Dental Concerns: Nausea; heartburn; Osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ); delayed healing in extraction site.
-Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precaution: none
-Side Effects: Nausea; heartburn
-Contraindications: abnormalities of the esophagus; inability to stand or sit for more than 30 min.
EFFEXOR
(venlafaxine)
Use: Tx of major depressive disorder; general anxiety disorder; social phobia; panic disorder.
Dental Tx Concerns: Significant Xerostomia; taste perversion; increase bleeding.
Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precaution: Administer with caution. Monitor vital signs. May increase diastolic BP & increase heart rate as side effect of drug.
