Schedule I

No accepted medical use and high potential for abuse.



The most dangerous of all schedule drugs with severe psychological and physical dependency.



No prescription permitted.



Examples: Heroin, LSD, marijuana (cannabis), PCP, peyote, hashish, amphetamine variants, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy)

Schedule II

Accepted medical use and high abuse potential (less abuse potential than previous scheduled drug).



Considered dangerous leading to the potential of severe psychological and physical dependency.



Prescription required; no refills permitted without new written prescription




Example: Cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), meperidine (Demerol), oxycodone (OxyCotin), fentanyl, Dexedrine, Adderall, and Ritalin


Schedule III

Accepted medical use and moderate to low potential for physical & psychological dependence.



Prescription required; 5 refills permitted in 6 months.



Example: combination products with less than 15mg of hydrocodone per dosage unit (Vicodin), products containing less than 90mg of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol with Codeine), Ketamine, anabolic steroids, testosterone and certain barbiturates such as butabarbital (Butisol)



Schedule IV

Accepted medical use and low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence.



Prescription required; 5 refills permitted in 6 months.



Example: Xanax, Soma, propoxyphene (Darvon), Darvocet, diazepam (Valium), Ativan, hydrochloride (Talwin), Ambien, chloral hydrate (Noctec), chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

Schedule V

Accepted medical use and low abuse potential.



No prescription required for individuals 18 or older.



Consist of preparations containing limited quantities of certain narcotics. Generally used for antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic purposes.



Example: cough preparations with less than 200mg of Codeine or per 100mL (Robitussin
AC), lomotil, Motofen, lyrica, Parepectolin
