Food and Drug Act of 1906
In response to growing addiction to opiates and cocaine-containing medicines, the Harrison Tax Act established that manufacturers, pharmacists, importers, and physicians prescribing narcotis should be liscensed and required to pay a tax.
1914 Harrison Tax Act

1927 Food, Drug and Inscticide Adminstration
In response to the fatal poisoning of 107 people, primarily children, by an untested suflanilamide concoction, this comprehensive, law requires new drugs be shown to be safe before marketing.

The United States Court of Appeals rules that the purpose for which a drug is to be used included on the label.
1950 Alberty Food Products vs U.S.
This law defines what drugs require a prescripition by a licensed practitioner and requires them to include this legend on the label: "Caution: Federak Law prohibits dispensing without a prescription" or the more recent "Rx Only"
1951 Durham-Humphrey Amendment
