Activated Charcoal
Trade Name: Actidose

Class: Adsorbant

MOA: Acts by binding with toxic substances within the GI tract.

Indications: Acute ingested poisoning. (Acetaminophen, aspriin, atropine, barbiturates, digitalis, glycosides, phenytoin, propoxyphene, strychnine, and trycyclic antidepressants.

Contraindications: Inability to control airway or poisoning from cyanide, mineral acids, caustic alkalis, organic solvents, iron, ethanol, and methanol.

Side Effects: May decrease absorption of all other oral meds. Vomiting after rapid ingestion, abdominal cramping, abdominal bloating, constipaiton, diarrhea.

Adult Dose: 1g/kg with 6-8oz water, then PO or via NG tube.
Aspirin
Trade name: ASA

Class:Analgesic, Antipyretic, Platlet Inhibitor, Antiinflammatory

MOA: Inhibits prostaglandins involved in the production of inflammation, pain, and fever.

Indications: To inhibit clot fformation in the presence of an acute MI. To inhibit clot fformation assocaited with thrombotic stroke.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to salicylates; active ulcer disease, and asthma. People with bleeding dissorders. Children with chicken pox or influenza.

Side Effects: Dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, tinnitus, hearing loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, heartburn, stomach pains,

Adult Dose: 160-325 mg chewable.
Albuterol
Trade Name: Proventil, Ventolin

Class: Sympathomimetic Bronchdialator

MOA: Stimulates the formation of adenosine monophosphate which causes relaxation of the smooth muscle in the bronchiole tree. It also reduces mucus secretion.

Indications:To relieve Bronchospasm secondary to asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema.
Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to drug.

Side Effects: Tremors, anxiety, dizziness, seizures, headache, insomnia, nausea, dyspepsia, pharyngitis, nasl congestion, palpitations, tachycardia, hypertension, bronchospasm, cough, weezing.

Adult Dose:90 mcg via MDI 2 sprays. 2.5mg in 2.5-3ml of NS via Nebulizer
Nitroglycerine
Trade Name: Nitrostat
Class: Nitrate
MOA: Smooth muscle relaxant that reduces PVR, BP, venous return, and cardiac workload.
Indications: Chest px associated with angina and acute myocardial infarction, and acute pulmonary edema.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, tolerance to nitrates, severe anemia, head trauma, hypotension, increased ICP, shock, and Pt's taking sildenafil and glaucoma.

Side Effects: Headache, apprehension, blurred vision, weakness, vertigo, dizziness, faintness.
Dextrose
Trade Name: D50W, 50% Dextrose

Class: Carbohydrate

MOA: Simple sugar that the body can metabolize rapidly

Indications: Documented hypoglycemia with altered mental status or no gag reflex

Contraindications: None. Use with caution in patients with increasing intercranial pressure.

Side effects: Warmth, pain, or burning at injection site, tissue necrosis, phlebitis, sclerosis, or thombosis at injection site.

Adult dose: 25g of 50% solution IV.
Epinephrine
Trade Name: Adenalin, Epinephrine

Class: Sympathomimetic

Acts on adrenergic receptors imitating all actions of the sympathetic nervous system. Increases myocardial contractions, Increases BP.
It dialates bronchiole smooth muscle and inhibits mucus production.

Indications: To restore cardiac rythm in cardiac arrest. Or to treat alergic reactions.

Contraindications: None for cardiac arrest. Epi is contraindicated in pt's with a hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic amines, narrow glaucoma, hemorragic traumatic or cardiogenic shock, not safe in women who are pregnant or nursing, use with caution in elderly.

Side effects: Nervousness, restlessness, sleeplessness, fear, anxiety, tremors, severe headache, weakness, tissue necrosis with repeated injections.

Adult dose: Cardiac-1mg 1:10,000 IV every 3-5 min until circulation is restored. ET tube2.0-2.5mg 1:10,000
Allergic reaction: 0.3-0.5 mg 1:1,000 SC or IM every 5-15 min as needed. 0.5-1.0mg/kg 1:10,000 IV if SC is ineffective or reaction is severe.
