Drop Hammer

Hoist line to lift ram; dropped by its own weight

Rarely used because of slow operation and pile breakage

Single Action Hammer

Ram lifted by steam; dropped by its own weight

Good for driving in compact/hard soil; low driving speeds, large headroom

Differential Hammer

Steam used to control rise and descent of hammer

Suited for light/moderate pile weights in soils of average resistance

Diesel Hammer

Ram is raised and fuel is injected; as ram dropps fuel and air gets compressed and hot resulting in explosion

Good against dense soil that provides a lot of skin resistance; terrible with soft soil

Hydraulic Hammer

Rams are lifted to a preset height using hydraulic pressure; dropped by its own weight

Very short drops, high efficencies when they are power assisted

Hydraulic Driver

Pile river grips the pile and pushes it down

well suited for areas with space and noise restrictions, low on vibrations

Vibratory Pile Driver

Two counter eccentric weights are rotated that generate vibratory forces

Soil type choices: sand & gravel; good for soil saturated in water
