Now as you can seehere, we've got a total of eight pages. Illustrator callsthese art boards and there's a few reasons for that. First of all, everysingle art board can be a different shape and size. Secondly, they're notnecessarily designed to be sequential pages. They can be in anyorder you like. And then finally, they're really designedto be containers. So let's say you have a big project, andyou need to put differentpieces of that project indifferent containers; why then, art boards are the perfectsolution.{{27<

CMYK document, That is:cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, that's designed for commercialreproduction.RGBdocument, that is: red, green, and blue, that'sdesigned for the internetIn my case, I'll justgo ahead and start with Print. Notice also that youcan name your document. I'll just go ahead and call mine EightEmptyArtboards, like thedocument we're seeing in the background. And this will serve asthe default name when you go to save the documentalthough you can always change that name anytime you like.

1PT is 1, 72nd of aninch, there's 12 points per pica, and there's six picasin an inch, and so we've got 72 points in an inch. cx;or67it;

But you can always override this unit ofmeasure by switching the Units option to anything that you're morecomfortable with, whether it's inches here in theStates, or millimeters, or centimeters, elsewherein the world. 57

You can use any unitof measure you like by the way; for example, I could enter 200 mmfor millimeters, or cm, if I like, for centimeters. And then I press theTab key, and Illustrator goes ahead and makes thatconversion as well. h77޿

Bleed option issomething that specifically applies to commercialreproduction.Solet's say you're creating a document that you're going to take to a commercial printer,and they're going to reproduce multiple copies ofthat document for you. If you're not going to create the artworktight to the edges of the page, then you don't need to worryabout the bleed, but if you are going to go all the way to theedge of the page, then what you're going to needyour printer to do is slice that page for you andyou'll want to make sure that you have some extra artwork rightthere at the side so that you don't see a little bit of white, in casethere's mis-registration on that press.

And Smart Guides areby default, these little green items on screen that showyou where your cursor is aligned. So, it's very usefulfor aligning objects to each other, and for telling whenyou're going to select an object, like the pathoutline, around these shorts.ri-17O;

If you'd rather see a different unit of measure, then all youhave to do is right-click on one of the rulers,and then you'll see a list of all the units available to you.I'llgo ahead and choose inches, and now I can see that the art boardmeasures ten inches wide and 8 inches tall. Now let's say I notonly want to change the size of this art board but Ialso want to get rid of the bleed. There's no reason tohave a bleed after all, because we have tons of empty spaceinside of this art board; so we're not printing tight tothe edge. So I'll go ahead and click on theDocument Setup button up here in what is known as the Control Panel,which is this strip just below the Menu bar, here inside ofIllustrator.Andwhen you click on Document Setup, you'll see your bleed options. And they're all linkedtogether once again. So I'll just change any oneof these values to zero and that'll get rid ofthe bleed. Problem is, I'm not seeing any page sizeinfo the way that I would inside of a standardlayout program. What you have to do instead is click onthis Edit Art Boards button, and that does twothings: first of all, it closes the Dialog Box, andsecondly, it switches you to a different tool hereinside the toolbox.Now,I want you to notice that I'm working with a two columntoolbox right now, and that's because my screen is kindof tiny. You might be seeing a single columntoolbox instead. And just so that you an I are on the samepage, I'll go ahead an switch to the single columntoolbox by clicking on this double arrow icon, in the upper leftcorner. And notice, now we have a single columnof icons,and the Artboard tool way down here at the bottomof the list, is selected. So, you can also justselect that tool, if you like.77nϱ<

I were working withthe Selection tool, which is also known as the Black arrow tool, up here at the top ofthe toolbox, which is Illustrator's default tool, and I wanted to change the size ofthe artboard, another way to work, would be to just select the Artboard tool downhere from the bottom of the list. All right, now I'm going to change the size of thisartboard, and notice you can just drag the corner of the art board in orderto resize it. Also notice that littlegray box that's next to my cursor, that's what'sknown as the heads up display, andthat's showing me the size of this art board on the fly.b

you can change the artboardname up here in the Control Panel as well.Alright,so once you're done modifying the artboards, all you have to do to escape thisartboard mode is press the Escape key on your keyboard. And notice, thatautomatically switches you back to the Selection tool, here at the top of thetoolbox.0pt;li57

The fact that theartwork moves, by the way, is a function of this icon rightthere. Move, copy artwork with art board. Now that can be auseful function, but in our case we don't want it. So go ahead and turnthat icon off by clicking on it. And now notice if Imove the art board, I move it independently of the artwork.

Whether we're duplicating an art board,or duplicating artwork. And you can see, that as soon as I pressthe Alt key, or the Option key on a Mac, I get a double arrow cursor, which isshowing me that I'll create a duplicate.n57߿

Now you want to makesure that you're seeing a solid outline aroundthe first art board, because that black outline tells you exactly whichart board is active. Notice the other art boards do not haveblack outlines. Now, I'll go up to this Alignment iconhere in the Control panel. Notice that bydefault, it's set to Align to Selection. You want to click onit and switch the setting to Align To Art Board. And then, you'll seesome additional alignment options. Go ahead and firstclick on horizontal align center which is the second icon in, and thenclick on vertical align center which is the second to last icon.

So, I'll start byresetting my view, which you can do by going up to the Viewmenu, and choosing Fit All In Window. And that's going tozoom you out, so that you can see all of the artboards inside of a document. etica",577
