Who was Thomas Ford?
(December 5, 1800 – November 3, 1850) was the eighth Governor of Illinois, and served in this capacity from 1842 to 1846. A Democrat, he is remembered largely for his involvement in the death of Joseph Smith, Jr., and the subsequent Illinois Mormon War. He is also the author of A History of Illinois (Chicago, 1854), published posthumously about the state from its founding in 1818 until 1847.
Who was Lilburn Boggs?
(December 14, 1796 – March 14, 1860) was the sixth Governor of Missouri from 1836 to 1840. He is now most widely remembered for his interactions with Joseph Smith and Porter Rockwell, and Missouri Executive Order 44, known by Mormons as the "Extermination Order", issued in response to the ongoing conflict between members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and other settlers of Missouri. Boggs was also a key player in the Honey War of 1837.
Who was Lucy Walker?
additional wife of Joseph Smith. She is the woman who told Joseph Smith she would not marry him until she received a personal revelation about polygamy. She received it and then consented to marry him.
Who was Oliver Granger?
baptized with his wife by Brigham Young. Served a mission for the church in NY. Was in charge of settling church debts in Kirtland in D&C 117. Told his name will be in sacred remembrance.
Who was Thomas B. Marsh?
was an apostle but left the church. signed an affidavit against Jospeh Smith which led ultimately to the Extermination Order in Missiouri. was believed he left the church over a dispute over milk trimming that his wife had with another woman and that she was repeatedly found in the wrong after various church leaders heard the dispute. was excommunicated shortly after the Extermination Order went out. rejoined the church after they made it to Utah. was warned and instructed by Joseph Smith in section 112. Mary Ann Angell Young?
second wife of Brigham Young after his first wife died. She had 6 of his children and gave him permission to practice plural marriage. she is the wife he wrote to while on his mission to England. gave Brigham Young encouragement to be faithful on his mission and raised 6 children without him there.

the doctrine of baptism for the dead was introduced at his funeral.
Who was William Burgess?
told the church leaders that he knew of a secret stash of money when the church leaders were in need of money and in debt after building the Kirtland Temple. It is at this time that he told them to come to Salem when they got there he told them that he could not find the house where this money was. From this experience came section 111

Saints must be humble, prayerful, and faithful

What was the purpose of Zion's Camp?
The purpose was to test the Saints and to also show them why they need the temple. Had the temple been built they would be endowed with power. They learn that they will receive Zion when they are ready and that the Lord will fight their battles for them. The army needs to be sanctified. Had the Saints done what they were suppose to do they would not have lost Zion.
What is the duty of the 12?
special witnesses of Christ charged with preaching the Gospel

in charge of spreading the Gospel and do more administrative work

In Section 112, the Lord counsels Thomas B. Marsh in what ways?
He was warned of things in his heart that displeased the Lord. He is called to hold the keys of the kingdom pertaining to the twelve. If he is humble the Lord will lead him and answer his prayers. Wherever he had to go the Lord would be with him.
What does Joseph learn about the priesthood in Section 121? About consecration?
Many are called, but few are chosen because their hearts are set upon things of the world. This is where consecration comes in, the ones who are not chosen are so focused on ‘things’ that they cannot give their all to the Lord.
Rights of the priesthood can only be controlled in righteousness.
Methods by which influence can be used: persuasion, long-suffering, gentleness etc.
When Joseph was in Liberty Jail, the Lord informed him that his enemies would face certain consequences and lose many blessings. What were they?
Their possessions would be destroyed and their names despised. They would not have the right of the priesthood.
They would not prosper

What do we learn about the priesthood in section 121?
The rights of the priesthood are connected with the powers of heaven. Many are called but few are chosen. No power or authority may be gained through the priesthood, only by persuasion, meekness, etc.
Context for sections 121-123?
30 November 1838 incarcerated in Liberty Jail in Missouri shortly after the October extermination order by Governor Boggs. Were in jail for 5 months. Joseph is in Liberty Jail on false charges. Petitions to government officials had been useless, and all seemed hopeless. Joseph writes a letter that is then made into sections 121-123
What assignments are given to Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon, and William Law in Section 124?
Hyrum Smith was assigned to be patriarch, bear record of all the things, and his name would be remembered with honor
Brigham Young was called to be president over the 12.
Sidney Rigdon was called to be Joseph Smith’s counsellor and humble himself. He is also asked to move his family to Nauvoo.
William Law was also called as a counsellor to Joseph Smith.
What does the Lord teach about the New and Everlasting Covenant in Section 132?
Exaltation is gained through the New and Everlasting Covenant. Through it men and women can become like God. Celestial marriage is required to receive exaltation. One must be married in the temple and sealed by someone with the appropriate power
Whom did Joseph Smith see in vision in Section 137?
He saw Alvin Smith who died without receiving the Gospel and his mother and father, Adam, Abraham, God and Christ.

He was seeing the celestial kingdom. He was being given an assurance that there was a way that people who did not have a chance to receive the Gospel could be redeemed.
When is plural marriage justified?
Only when the Lord commands it. Jacob 2:30 states the Lord may authorize it to raise up a righteous generation.
How do the Saints try to redeem Zion?
They send down a small army of men as Zion’s Camp then the Lord tells them to go home.

That He works in his own time and that the Saints will get back Zion but must be faithful and follow his commands

What does it mean to be called and chosen?
Being called is to receive the priesthood; chosen is magnifying your priesthood. Magnifying happens (generally) by following the commandments and being more concerned with the things of God than the things of man.
What does it mean to receive Grace for Grace?
we grow in the Gospel step by step, as we are faithful to the knowledge and commands that the Lord has given us we will receive greater gifts and wisdom
What does God mean by saying He'll give us power?
He'll give us the ability to act in God’s name; it comes from the priesthood
What does it mean to be sanctified?
becoming clean and being born again through the Atonement and the Gift of the Holy Spirit so that we no longer want to do any evil
What does it mean to be converted?
Putting off the natural man, giving our lives to the Lord and begin the process of becoming like him by following his commandments

Joseph wanted to know what to do about Saints in Iowa.
Told Iowa was not a permanent dwelling place.

They were told to gather from everywhere and build stakes of Zion.
What does the Lord teach the Saints about the proper order of Baptism for the Dead in Sections 127, 128?
127 - records must be kept, what is recorded on earth is recorded in heaven.
128 - More about logistics of recording, again the idea of binding is presented. The baptismal font is a similitude of the grave, must be “underground”. Elijah restored power for the baptism of the dead.
How does Joseph describe angels in section 129; what should one do if the spirit of a just man appears to you?
Angles- are resurrected personages, having bodies of flesh and bones.
A spirit- is a just man made perfect but has not yet been resurrected.
Ask to shake the angel’s hand.
If an angel, he will consent and his hand will be felt.
If a spirit of a just man, he will refuse but still share his message.
If a devil, he will consent but nothing will be felt.
