EC: Pre-Drive Checklist:
Turn signals F/B, Brakelights, Horn, Emergency lights
EC: Hoses/Leaks
- Look for puddles on the ground
- Look for dripping fluids on underside of engine and transmission
- Inspect hoses for condition and leaks (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
EC: Oil level
- Indicate where dipstick is located (32 quarts of 15W-40)
- See that oil level is within safe operating range, level must be above refill mark. (color, viscosity, FO)
EC: Coolant level
- Inspector reservoir sight glass or (if engine is not hot) remove radiator cap & check for visible coolant level. (color, viscosity, FO) (58 quarts)
EC: Power steering fluid
- Indicate where power steering fluid dipstick is located
- Check for adequate power steering fluid level, must be above refill mark. (color, viscosity, FO)
EC: Windshield washer fluid
- Check fluid and the cap is secured. (color, viscosity, fo)
EC: Automatic Transmission fluid level
- (Check while engine is running) (color, viscosity, fo)
EC: Engine Compartment Belts
- Check and identify the following belts for snugness, cracks, frays, or wear: power steering belt, water pump belt, alternator belt, air compressor. (color, viscosity, fo) (Detroit Diesel #60, 6 cylinder, 7743 inches, Bore 5.12 x Stroke 6.3 = 400 HP)
Cab Check: Clutch/Gearshift
- Make sure the parking break is set
- Place gearshift lever in neutral (or park, for automatic transmission)
- Accelerator checked for looseness, sticking, or damage
- Listen for unusual engine noises (color, viscosity, fo)
Cab Check: Oil Pressure gauge
- Make sure oil pressure gauge is working
- Check that pressure gauge shows increasing or normal oil pressure or that warning light goes off.
- If equipped, oil temperature gauge should begin a gradual rise to the normal operating range.
Cab Check: Coolant Temperature gauge
- Make sure the temperature gauge is workingn (180-220°F)
- Temperature gauge should begin to climb to the normal operating level, range or light will go out
Cab Check: Ammeter/Voltmeter
- Check that gauges show alternator and/or generator is charging or that warning light is off. (12V req., 6 batteries @ 12V each)
Cab Check: Oil temperature gauge
- Make sure gauge begins gradual rise to normal operating levels
Cab Check: Mirror and Windshields
- Mirrors should be clean and adjusted properly from the inside
- Windshield should be clean with no illegal stickers, no obstructions, or damage to the glass. (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
Cab Check: Emergency Equipment
- Check for spare electrical fuses
- Check for three red reflective triangles
- Check for a properly charged and rated fire extinguisher (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
Cab Check: Check optional emergency equipment
- Tire changing equipment
- List of emergency phone numbers
- Accident reporting kit
Cab Check: Steering wheels
- Check for looseness, sticking or damage no more then 10% play, about 2” on a 20” wheel.
Cab Check: Wipers/Washers
- Check that wiper arms and blades are secure, not damaged, and operated smoothly
Cab Check: Lighting Indicators
- Test that dash indicators work when corresponding lights are turned on: left & right turn signals, 4-way flashers, high beam headlight
Cab Check: Horn
- Check that air horn and/or electric horn work
Cab Check: Parking brake check
- Fasten your seat belt, allow the vehicle to move forward slowly and apply the braking or set the brake and try to move the vehicle. The brake should not allow movement.
Cab Check: Seat belt
- Check that the seat belt is securely mounted, adjusts and latches properly
External Inspection: Lights/Reflectors
- Clearance lights (red on rear, amber elsewhere)
- Headlights, taillights, turn signals, 4-way flashers, brake lights, red reflectors (on rear) and amber reflectors elsewhere
External Inspection: Steering box/hoses
- Check that the steering box is securely mounted and not leaking, look for any missing nuts, bolts, and cotter keys,
- Check for power steering fluid leaks or damage to power steering hoses. (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
External Inspection: Steering linkage
- Check that joints and sockets are not worn out or loose and that there are no missing nuts, bolts or cotter keys.
External Inspection: Suspension
- Look for shifted, cracked, missing or broken leaf springs (if > ¼ or more)
- Look for broken or distorted coil springs
- Check torsion bars, torque arms, suspensions components (U-bolts, frame rail), check that they are not damaged and are mounted securely.
- Axles secure to frame rail. (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
External Inspection: Tires
- Tread depth of 4/32” on steering axle tires, 2/32” on all other tires
- Check that tread is evenly worn and look for cuts or other damage to tread or sidewalls. Also make sure that valve caps and stems are not missing or broken
- Check for proper inflation by using a tire gauge, or inflation by striking tires with a mallet or other device. (120 psi)
- Duals should not be touching and nothing stuck between them.
External Inspection: Hub, Oil Seals/Axle Seals
- See that hub oil/grease seals are not leaking and is adequate, caps are properly secured (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
External Inspection: Fuel tank
- Are secure with not leaks from tanks or lines or caps, no rust. (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken) (65 gallons)
External Inspection: Battery Box
- Connections are tight and cell caps are present and tight
- Cover or door is secure
- Fluid level if visible is adequate (unless maintenance free)
- Vents in caps are free of debris
External Inspection: Exhaust
- Is free of damage and leaks; no rust or carbon build up, no excessive or abnormal noise when running. (… are clean, nothing is cracked, damaged, or broken)
External Inspection: COLA
- Cut in: engine in idle, pump brakes and watch needle and listen in governor cuts in 85 psi.
- Cut Out: fast idle, governor must cut out prior to 130 psi
- Leak (static): turn off engine, let system settle, air pressure leak < 2 psi /min
- Applied: “ “ apply brake, air pressure leak < 3 psi/min
- Low air pressure warning device: pump brake until warning signal activates (55-75 psi)
- Rate of air pressure build up: engine at normal rpms, 85-100 psi/45 seconds
- Service test: normal air pressure, then let engine roll forward ≈ 5mph then apply brake pedal
- Parking brake: “ “ pull parking brake.
