Signs and symptoms preceding the development of diverticulosis
constipation, irregular bowel, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, bloating and abdominal distention.
Symptoms of diverticulitis
mild or severe pain in lower left quadrant, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and leukocytosis.
What to eat with acute diverticulitis?
NPO! NG tube to suction. Don't send anything through the colon.
Outpatient teaching: Habits for regular bowel elimination in those with diverticulosis
Clear liquids; then high fiber, low fat;
increased fluid intake to at least 2L/d
bulk forming laxatives (metamucil)
Complications of Diverticulitis
perforation, peritonitis, abscess formation, bleeding
