Organisms/ 6 Things Living Things Have

Organisms are all living things. They grow, reproduce, use energy, exchange gases to be able to breathe, have cells, respond to stimuli including only when the animal or plant moves itself.

Cell

Cell is the basic unit of life. Every organism has 1 cell and some have many more. You can only see cells through a microscope.

Photosynthesis

The food making process of plants where they take in Carbon Dioxide (CO2), sun energy, and water. Plants only breathe Carbon Dioxide in the day as they take in oxygen in the night.

Organelles

The parts of a cell that do specific jobs. For all the jobs to be done a cell must have different kinds of organelles. Such as the nucleus and ER. Most organelles are found in both animal and plant cells.

Nucleus

It is a organelle that controls the cell's activities. It is almost like the brain or the center of the cell.

Mitochondria

It is where the energy process occurs. Cells have hundreds of Mitochondria. They are like the powerhouses of a cell.

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm holds all the organelles in place. It is a clear jelly-like material that surrounds the nucleus.

Vacuole

It stores the water and food the cell can't use right away. It also stores waste. Plants cells only have 1 large vacuole while animal cells have many.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

A organelle that transports food, water and waste around the cell, and out of the cell.

Chloroplasts/ Chlorophyll

Chloroplasts are a organelle that contains a green colouring called chlorophyll that traps sun energy that the plant uses to make food, it is what gives plants their green colour. Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells.

Cell Membrane

It gives the cell shape and holds the cytoplasm. Controls the entering and exiting of the cell. It will let in food and water but will keep out harmful things.

Cell Wall

It is found only in cell walls, it is a structure that provides protection and support for the cell.

Multicellular

These are organisms with many cells. They have structures to help the organelles do jobs. Multicellular organisms can do more complex things than unicellulars.

Micro- Organisms

Also known as unicellular, these organisms can only be seen through a microscope. Bacteria and fresh water Euglena are examples of Micro- Organisms. These only have 1 cell.
