On Christmas Eve...
On Christmas Eve, Dada went downtown to this bar that he used to hang out in.
By the time he got home...
By the time he got home, it was way past midnight, and, in the dark, after drinking all night, Dada forgot about the Santa on the porch...
...mistook it for a burglar
...mistook it for a burglar or something because I woke up to hear shouting out on the lawn...gunshots...breaking glass.
I ran into Mom and Dad's room
I ran into Mom and Dad's room and I looked...and there was my Mother, on the floor, in the middle of all of this shattered glass and blood.
She must have been
She must have been at the window...and I just stood there... it was like a dream.
But then I heard the front door
But then I heard the front door open, and footsteps running up the stairs.
I though that whoever had been
I thought that whoever had been out on the lawn must be coming to get me now, and there was no place to hide.
So I lay down
So I lay down beside my mother and played dead.
And when Dad got to the door
And when Dad got to the door of the bedroom he saw me and my mother and all that blood, and... he stumbled backwards out of the room
and I heard him crying
and I heard him crying and saying "no, no, no," and I recognized his voice. I realized it was Dad. But then there was another gunshot. And then he wasn't crying anymore.
