One or both kidneys may been in an abnormal position. Most ectopic kidneys are located in the pelvis. If both kidneys remain in the pelvis they may fuse at midline creating a disk shaped kidney
horse shoe kidney
is a result of a fusion of the inferior poles of the two ectopic kidneys. Ascent is not possible this situation as the kidney gets caught in the root of the mesentery
