Mutation in an ion channel which leads to dysfunction and inadequate hydration of the ciliated epithelium. Thus the mucous layer is NOT floating on a layer of water anymore and the cilia cannot move the mucous out to clear pathogens.
Cystic Fibrosis
Contraction of the smooth muscle in the respiratory system which leads to more constricted lumens, especially in the bronchioles.
Asthma
Destruction of the alveolar septa (especially the reticular and elastic fibers) which effective decreases the surface area for gas exchange.
Emphysema
Air in the pleural cavity. This stops the lungs from adhering to the body wall as the rib cage expands during inspiration. This essentially results in a collapsed lung.
Pneumothorax
Type II pneumocytes produce either too little or no surfactant to decrease surface tension. Most often seen in infants.
Respiratory Distress
