what are the overall functions of the digestive system?

ingestion, mechanical processing & digestion, chemical digestion, secretion, absorption, excretion

what structures are part of the digestive tract & which ones are accessory structures?

structures: oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine
accessory structures: salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas

what's mechanical processing?

after the food's been chewed and mixed with saliva, it's swallowed and pushed through the digestive system.

what's chemical digestion?

the breakdown of food & its nutrients with the use of enzymes.

describe the 4 layers of the digestive tract

1. mucosa (lamina propria & epithelium): inner layer that lines digestive tract.


2. submucosa: dense irregular connective tissue


3. muscularis externa: smooth muscle arranged in circular & longitudinal layers


4. serosa: serous membrane that covers muscularis externa (outer layer)

define mesentery, lesser & greater omentum, falciform ligament

mesentery: sheets of serous membrane that support portions of digestive tract.


lesser omentum: holds stomach


greater omentum: provides padding, protection, insulation & energy reserves


falciform ligament: ligament that runs through liver that connects it to the abdominal wall

whats peristalsis & segmentation?

peristalsis: contraction used to move food/bile/etc. forward


segmentation: contraction to mix food with digestion chemicals&fluids
