Ingestion
eating the food
Digestion
is chemical reactions breaking down foods into smaller particles.
Absorption
nutrients that pass through the cells to go into the blood vessels.
Assimilation
absorbed nutrients created into new cell parts.
Transport
nutrient that enter the blood are transported around the body.
Why is it important to digest large food molecules?
it easier to be absorbed, and in order to pass through the cells ( plasma membrane) it has to be small.
Why are enzymes required?
speeds up the process of hydrolysis by lowering the activation energy. (saves time and energy).
Peristalsis
wave-like muscle contractions.
pushes food from Esophagus down to the stomach.
Gastric Juice
made of hydrochloric acid and pepsin.
converts food meal into acid chyme. (chemical reactions)
Mucus
is coated on the lining of the stomach.
helps prevent the gastric acid from destroying the cells.
Epiglottis
prevents mixing food with air. Prevents choking.
Duodenum
the first part of the small intestine--> mixes acid chymes with acid from pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.
Sodium Bicarbonate
produced by the Pancreas, and helps neutralize he stomach acids.
Proteases
digest protein
Bile
produced by the liver, and stored in the gallbladder. It turns fat into fatty acids.
Microvilli or Villi
the small has a huge surface area because of Microvilli and Villi that increases the rate of absorption.
Lacteal
the core of each villus contains a network of blood vessles and small vessels of the lympathetic system.
Large Intestine
colon; recovers water from the almentary canal. The waste tracts the feces that make it solid and pass through the colon..making their way into the rectum, and exit out in the anus.
