Diffusion
The movement of molecules from reqions of high concentration to low concentration. It is a passive process, requiring no additional energy input.
Osmosis
The passive movement (diffusion) of water molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
Semi-permeable membrane
Some substances are able to pass through a membrane whilst others cannot.
Solute
A substance which is dissolved within another substance (the solvent). For example, sugar dissolving in water.
Equilibrium
When the molecules are even throughout a space - it is called EQUILIBRIUM
Concentration gradient
The concentration gradient is the amount of substance in a particular area. Diffusion is when the substance gradually spreads out in its' area.
dialysis tubing
A semi-permeable membrane made from cellulose. Has very small pores that allow some substance through but not others.
Solvent
A substance (usually liquid) which dissolves the solute. Water is an important solvent in Biology.
Solution
A mixture of the solvent and solute.
