Osmosis

-The diffusion of water across selectively permeable membrane

-The movement of water.

-Low solute concentration to area of high solute concentration

-Passive (no energy)

Diffusion

-Movement of molecules from an area of high solute concentration to an area of low solute concentration.

-Un-facilitated (no help) and is passive

-Will occur until equilibrium is reached.

Isotonic

-A solution that causes no change in the size of cell

-Both solutions have same concentration of solute.

Hypotonic

-A solution that causes a cell to swell because of osmosis

-Lower concentration than another

Hypertonic

-A solution that causes a cell to shrink because of osmosis

-Higher concentration than another

Fact

Animal cell will explode in a hypotonic solution but it won't in a plant cell because of the cell wall.

Fact

Facilitated diffusion occurs through channels in the membrane . It is for molecules that cannot pass through the membrane quickly.

Active Transport

Low concentration to high concentration, requires energy (ATP)
