Active Transport
The use of energy in the form of ATP to move substances across the membrane.
Passive Transport
Does not require energy; makes use of diffusion and filtration.
Diffusion
Particles spread out evenly throughout an available space and move from regions of high concentration to those of low concentration.
Osmosis
Water moves from high concentration to an area of low water concentration.
Isotonic
When the solute concentration of water is the same as that inside the cell.
Hypertonic
When the solute is more concentrated outside the cell then inside the cell.
Hypotonic
Solute concentration outside the cell is lower that that inside the cell.
Filtration
The movement of water and solutes through the membrane by fluid or hydrostatic pressure.
