What are some risk factors for DM Type II?

Family history of a 1st degree relative, gestational diabetes, obesity, ethnicity, HTN, acanthosis nigricans, PCOS, hypertriglyceridemia

What are some complications of DM Type II?
|
retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, atherosclerotic disease, susceptibility to infections, gastroparesis, impotence, gangrene of the extremities

What is the basic pathophysiology of diabetes?
|
Defects in insulin secretion (type I) or insulin resistance (type II)

What is the criteria for diagnosis of diabetes?
|
1) symptoms of diabetes plus casual plasma glucose > 200 mg/dL
2) fasting plasma glucose > 126 mg/dL on two occasions 3) 2 hour plasma glucose > 200 mg/dL during oral glucose tolerance test |
