Diabetes Mellitus
a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action or both
Insulin
pickup truck for glucose
glucose used as energy
pancreas produces insulin via ilet cells
ketones
biproduct of burning fat/muscle
people w/diabetes have ketones in urine b/c they burn fat/muscle instead of carbs-when not enough food in normal person
How Insulin Works
normally continuously released into the bloodstream in small increments (basal rate) w/boluses when food is ingested to maintain normal blood glucose levels (norm = 70-110)
What Insulin Promotes
promotes glucose transport from the bloodstream, across the cell membrane
Without Insulin
without insulin, or if cells resist insulin, glucose remains in the blood stream and cant get into the cells as fuel and blood levels of glucose increase, but cells are starving for energy
DM as multisystem
related to abnormal insulin production, impaired insulin utilization or both

prevalence increasing rapidly

leading cause of adult blindness, ESRD, amputations, heart disease and stroke
Hyperglycemia
damage to endothelium (inner lining of blood vessels)
