D50W may increase cerebral ischemia or infarction cause by intracranial hemorrhage or increase cerebral edema in patients with normal or elevated blood glucose levels. establish IV in the largest vein possible. patients may experience warmth or burning at the iv site and can develop plebitis, sclerosis or thrombosis of the vein. ensure IV patency by aspirating prior to administration and then every 10-15ml during administration. concentrated dextrose causes tissue necrosis if injected into the interstitial space. |
