what does the urinary system mostly form from?
intermediate mesoderm
what parts of the urinary system develop from endoderm rather than intermediate mesoderm?
most of bladder, urethra
how many pairs of kidneys intially form and in what order?
from cranially to caudally: pronephros, mesonephros, metanephros.
what does the pronephros consist of?
rudimentary kidney tubules and blood vessels: nephrotomes.
what do nephrotomes contribute to?
the mesonephric duct
what form the bowman's capsule?
mesonephric tubules
what does the mesonephric duct empty into?
cloaca
where does the metanephros form?
pelvic region
what does the metanephros do?
forms tubules similar to the mesonephric tubules.
how does the ureter grow?
ureteric bud grows out of the mesonephric duct to meet the metanephric blastema
how does the ureteric bud form the renal pelvis, calices, and collecting ducts?
branching morphogenesis.
what forms the nephrons?
metanephric blastema
how does the kidney position change in development?
kidneys shift more cranially in the abdomen.
what are pelvic kidneys?
kidneys that have failed to ascend
what does the urorectal septum do?
it divides the cloaca into the urogenital sinus and the anorectal canal
what are the 3 parts of the urogenital sinus?
bladder, pelvic part, and phallic part
what happens to the ureters after they bud from the mesonephric ducts?
they eventually assume their own entrances to the bladder. the mesonephric duct begins to be absorbed into wall of urogenital sinus
what happens to the mesonephric duct in males and females?
females- it degenerates.
males- forms the vas deferens
what does a persistent allantois result in?
urachal fistula
what is a urachal sinus?
bladder defect
what are local areas of allantois persistence?
urachal cysts
does the kidney vascular supply change as they ascend?
yes
