5 derivatives of branchial arches

Muscle

Blood Vessels

Nerves

Bone

Cartilage

Neural crest cell develops into:

Bone

Cartilage

Somitomeric mesoderm develops into:

Muscles

Arteries

Nerves that supply muscles developed from branchial arches

SVE's

1st branchial arch (CMN)

"Mandibular Arch"

Cartilage = from Meckel's cartilage - Malleus and Incus; Ossification of Meckel's = mandible and sphenomandibular ligament

Muscle = Muscles of mastication; Medial and Lateral Pterygoids, Masseter, Temporalis; Mylohyoid, anterior belly of digastric, tensor tympani and tensor veli palitini

Nerve = trigeminal nerve (V)

2nd branchial arch (CMN)

Hyoid Arch

Cartilage = Reichert's cartilage - Stapes, styloid process, temporal bone, lesser horn/upper body of hyoid

Muscle = Stapedius, stylohyoid, posterior belly of digastric, muscles of facial expression

Nerve = Facial (VII)

3rd branchial arch (CMN)

Cartilage = greater horn and lesser body of hyoid (compliments 2nd BA)

Muscle = stylopharyngeus

Nerve = glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)

4th and 6th Branchial arch (CMN)

Cartilage = fuse to form laryngeal cartilages = thyroid, cricoid, arytenoid, corniculate, cuneform

Muscle = cricothyroid, levator veli palantini, constrictors of pharynx, intrinsic muscles of larnyx

Nerve = Vagus nerve, superior laryngeal branch and inferior branch of vagus

Grooves

4 grooves, but only 1 is viable

1st groove = external auditory meatus

2 - 4 = degenerate

If 2nd pharyngeal pouch and groove persist = pharyngeal fistula

Aortic arches

1 and 2 degenerate

3 = ICA stem

4 = proximal subclavian artery on the right, portion of arch of aorta on the left

6 = pulmonary arteries and ductus arteriosus

5 pharyngeal pouches

1 = tubotympanic recess or the external auditory meatus

2 = Tonsillar fossa and palatine tonsils

3 = dorsal wing = inferior parathyroid; ventral wing = thymus

4 = dorsal wing = superior parathyroid; ventral wing = thymic tissue

5 = part of 4th pouch; ultimobranchial bodies - parafollicular cells - calcitonin

Development of Parathyroids and thymus gland

3rd pharyngeal pouch = inferior parathyroid (from dorsal wing) and thymus gland (from ventral wing)

4th pharyngeal pouch = superior parathyroid (dorsal wing)

Foramen cecum and thyroglossal duct cysts

Thyroglossal duct is obliterated leaving the foramen cecum, connects the thyroid to the tongue

Thyroglossal duct cysts may form along path of descent due to ectopic thyroid tissue; difficult to remove w/out removing portions of hyoid bone
