What is GDP? |
Gross DoMestic product is the total value of goods and services a country produces in a year, it is a measure of wealth as a country develops gets higher |

What is gross national income |
The total value of goods and services of people that nationality produce in a year. (GDP plus money from people living abroad ) it is often given in US dollars it is also called gross national product |

Gross national income per head |
This is the GNI divided by the population of a country it is sometimes called GNI per capita |

The number of babies who did before the age of one per thousand babies born |

What is the people per doctor? |
This is the average number of people for each doctor it is a measure of health as a country develops it gets lower as there is less strain on health care |

What is the difference between quality of life and standard of living |
Standard of living is their material wealth eg.Income, whether they own a car
Quality of life includes standard of living but also other things that aren't easy to measure for example how safe they are and how nice their environment is.

What environmental factors affect how developed a country is? |
Poor climate, poor farming land, limited water supplies, lots of natural hazards, few raw materials |

How can climb it affect development? |
If a country has a poor climate I E. Really hot all really cold, they won't be able to grow much
This reduces the amount of food produced which can limit trade
It also means people have fewer crops to sell so less money to spend on goods and services which reduces the quality of life
The government gets less money from taxes as people are poor which means there is less to spend on developing the country
It can also lead to malnutrition for example in Chad and Ethiopia

How can poor farming land affect development |
If the land in the country is steep or has poor soil then they will not produce a lot of food |

How can limited water supplies affect development |
Some countries don't have a lot of water e.g. Egypt, Jordan. This makes it harder for them to produce lots of food. This has the same effect as poor climate see above |

How can lots of natural hazards affect development |
Countries that have a lot of natural disasters have to spend a lot of money rebuilding disasters that occur meaning there is less money for development |

Few raw materials |
Countries without many raw materials have fewer products to make and sell
This means they have less money to spend in development
Some countries have lots of raw materials but not enough money to create the machines to exploit them. |

What is a primary product? |
Primary products are raw materials for example wood, metal and stone.
You don't make much profit by selling primary products and the prices are unstable

What are manufactured goods? |
Man made objects such as cars etc. You make a decent profit from manufactured goods as you can buy raw materials for cheep and sell manufactured good for a lot |

What was the impact on NICARAGUA? |
3000 died 50,000 live stock died and crops failed 70% of roads were damaged And 71 bridges destroyed 24, 000 house destroyed 340 schools and 90 health centres damaged / destroyed |

How did this affect development in Nicaragua? |
The GDP grew by 4% in 1998 which was slower than expected
Exports of rice went down so people earned less money
The totals damage of the hurricane was at around 1.2 billion
Education of children suffered and the number of children that worked increased by 8.1% |

7000 people were killed, destroyed 70% of the countries crops, 80% of transport infrastructure severely damaged, 35,000 houses destroyed, 20% of schools damaged as well as 117 health centres and six hospitals |

Agriculture once made up 27% of the countries GDP in 2000 it dropped out to 18% because of the damage to crops caused by the hurricane
GDP was meant to go by 5% but only grew by 3%

How do people try to improve their own quality of life? |
Moving from rural to urban areas, things like water, food and jobs are easier to get
Some can improve their homes to make them safer and cleaner
Communities can work together to provide a better quality of life in the community. |

What is fair trade? |
It's about getting a fair price for goods in poorer countries.
Buyers also pay extra on top of the fair price to help develop where the goods came from
Only producers that retreat employees well can be part of the scheme

What is an issue with fair trade? |
Producers make too much food because of the good prices which can cause world prices to fall negatively effecting farmers not part of the scheme |

What is a trading group? |
A group of countries that reduce the barriers between them for example reduce import taxes to increase trade between them.
However it is difficult for poor countries to trade to countries that are part of trading groups which reduces export income for other countries not in a trade group |

What is debt abolition? |
When the debt of a country is cancelled, this means money can be made to develop rather then spend on debt. Eg. ZAMBIA has 4 billion dollars of debt removed in 2005 and was able to provide free health care for millions |
