Determinants of health

- Factors that raise or lower a level of health in a population or individual




- Determinants of health help to explain or predict trends in health and why some groups have better or worse health than others




- Determinants can be classified in many ways such as biological , behavioral , physical environment and social.

Biological determinants of health

refers to structure of cells , tissues and systems of the body , their structure and how well they function. Factors relating to the body impact on health such as body weight , blood pressure levels , glucose regulation and genetics.

Behavioral determinants of health

the choices people make in their lives that impact on their health status. Actions or patterns of living of an individual or group that impact on health such as smoking , eating practices , sexual behavior and participation in physical activity.




E.g tobacco smoking , alcohol consumption , drug use , physical activity levels and sexual behavior.

Social determinants of health

aspects of society and the social environment that impact on health such as poverty , early life experience , social networks and support.




Examples include ,


socioeconomic status , work and unemployment , social excursion , social isolation , stress , food security , early life experiences , access to health care and health services

Physical environment determinants of health

The physical surroundings in which we live , work and play. The physical environment includes air and water , workplaces , housing , roads , nature , schools , recreations settings and exposure to hazards.




Examples include : Housing , work environment , urban design and infrastructure ( roads , buildings, air quality and climate and climate change.
