Affect
The external manifestation of feeling or emotion which is manifested in facial expression, tone of voice, and body language. For example, a patient may be said to have flat affect meaning an absence of facial expression.
Anhedonia
inability to experience pleasure

mood disorder that includes one or more manic episodes alternate with major depression
Depression
persistent low mood, feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, worthlessness, anhedonia
Dysphoria
prominent depressive symptoms superimposed on manic psychosis
Euphoria
a feeling of great happiness and well-being
Expansive mood
grandiose, flamboyant, extravagant, larger than life. Characterized by inappropriate lack of restraint in expressing ones feelings and overvaluing one’s own importance frequently.
Flight of ideas
a continuous flow of speech in which the person jumps rapidly from one topic to another. Sometimes the listener can keep up with the changes and at other times it is necessary just to listen to the themes in the incessant talking. Themes often are grandiose.
Hypomanic episode-
a mildly dysphoric mood, abnormal or persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood for at least 4 days, no impairment in social or occupational functioning, not severe enough to cause impairment or require hospitalization.
Lability of mood-
characterized by rapid shifts in mood which may be as dramatic as laughing one minute and crying the next; unstable.
Mania-
An unstable elevated mood in which delusion, poor judgment, and other signs of impaired reality testing are evident. During a manic episode, patients have marked impairment of social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning.
Manic episode-
grandiosity, over activity, distractibility, socially inappropriate behavior, increased appetite, and impaired insight.
Mood-
a pervasive and sustained emotion that, when extreme, can markedly color the way the individual perceives the world.
Mood disorders-
a category of disorders characterized by disturbances of mood that range from elation to depression and interfere with normal functioning.
Rapid cycling-
Experiencing four or more mood episodes in a 12 month period.
Unipolar-
Depression is a disturbance in mood characterized by varying degrees of sadness, disappointment, loneliness, hopelessness, self-doubt, and guilt. These feelings can be quite intense and may persist long periods of time. Daily activities may become more difficult, but the individual may still be able to cope with them. It is at this level, however, that feelings of hopelessness can become so intense.
