-most widely known theory
-Beck as a psychiatrist was originally trained in psychoanalysis
-he wanted to prove that depression is anger turned toward self/inward. Turns out that clients' anger was not turned toward self but viewed themselves negatively. (I am an idiot. Negative view toward others and future.)
Describe cognitive vulnerability and schema
-Everybody possesses unique vulnerability and pathology
-bipolar and schizo are genetically related
-depression is related to schema
-schema is a concept of yourself and how the world works. It is developed from childhood
-people around you are more responsible for your schema. (eg, you are a bad kid, and I wish you weren't around you.)
-schema can change, and that's what you want to do in Tx
-Depression rates go up for girls a lot more than boys once they hit puberty
-schema comes from messages whom you are closed to.
Functions of schema

-they guide the way we interpret and attend to (rejected for a date)
-They guide what you remember in schema congruent and schema consistent manner (you'd be able to list quickly)
Schema lies dormant until activated in some way
-can be activated by stress in general
-COGNITIVE SHIFT: once maladaptive cognitive schema is activated, you experience cognitive shift
-concept of spreading activation
-You may have that schema but if you schema is never activated,d you may never experience depression
Describe sociotropic vs. autonomous
-autonomous: value life on external indicators of success (eg, professional success, more value to achievement)
-sociotropic: value relationship more than external indicator (motivated b/c they want to be connected with people. More vulnerable to relationship failures)
Describe what happens when you experience cognitive shift
-you get cognitive distortions
-as a result you get maladaptive interpretation of events
-your selective attentions to certain data
-you get maladaptive emotions, behavior, phyiologic reactions
-
