Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of ipratropium.
Atrovent. It is used for bronchial asthma and taken by inhalation. It works by blocking muscarinic receptors (like atropine) but doesn't enter circulation. This directly decreases bronchial muscle tone.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of hyoscyamine.
Anaspaz. It is the pure active isomer of atropine. It is used in dentistry to decrease salivation. It is the prototype antimuscarinic.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of Scopolamine.
Scopace or Transderm-Scop. It is used to treat motion sickness in patch form. It is also used to treat Meniere's disease by stopping inappropriate information from the inner ear. It is an antimuscarinic.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of Glycopyrrolate.
Robinul. It is used to decrease secretions. Antimuscarinic, but does not cross BBB because it's a quaternary ammonium compound. Given by IV or intramuscular.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of Propantheline.
Pro-Banthine. Blocks secretions. Anti-muscarinic. In pill form to treat ulcers. Anti-muscarinic, so it has all the effects of other anti-muscarinic quaternary ammonium compounds.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of Benztropine. Also give site of action.
Cogentin. Intramuscular or IV antimuscarinic. Used against Parkinson's disease because it acts centrally and not peripherally.
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of tolterodine.
Detrol. Used to prevent accidental urination. Anti-muscarinic, so prevent contraction of detrusor muscle of bladder. Taken orally.
What are the contraindications of anti-muscarinics?
Angle-closure glaucoma, obstructive GI or GU disease, Myasthenia gravis, prostatic hypertrophy (because urination can be very difficult)
What are the common side effects of anti-muscarinics?
Xerostomia, hyperthermia in children (because it prevents sweating), tachycardia (with atropine), sedation and confusion (scopolamine), mydriasis, cycloplegia (paralysis of ciliary muscle of eye).
Give the trade name, common uses, mechanism of action, and mode of administration of physostigmine.
Eserine. It is used to treat atropine overdose. It may also be used to treat glaucoma. It is given by IV or intramuscular.
