The initial formation of tooth decay.

Lactobacilli

Bacteria that produce lactic acid from fermentable carbohydrates.

Mutans Streptococci

Bacteria with significant potential to cause dental caries.

Pellicle

A thin layer of salivary proteins coating the surface of the teeth.

Plaque

A sticky, usually tooth-colored film on the teeth that is formed by and harbors bacteria and their by-products, also known as a biofilm.

Rampant Caries

Quickly developing decay apparent throughout the mouth.

Remineralization

The restoring of minerals to tooth structure.

Root surface caries

Decay found on the root surfaces of the teeth.

Xerostomia

Abnormal dryness of the mouth due to insufficient amount of saliva.

Alloy

A mixture of metals.

Amalgam

A soft metal made of alloy mixed with mercury to restore form and function to teeth.

Bonding

Verb: Adhering tooth-colored resin composite to a tooth surface to create a bond.

Noun: Process by which tooth-colored resin composite is bonded, sculpted, hardened, and polished to tooth surfaces, usually for aesthetic purposes.

Composite Resin

Tooth-colored filling material made of silica or porcelain particles interlaced with liquid resin.

Curing

Chemical or physical process that improves the properties of a dental material, such as hardness and strength.

Filler

Silica or porcelain particles that add strength to composite resins.

Galvanic

Relating to an electric shock due to two different metals coming in contact.

Inlay

A gold, porcelain, or resin filling made to fit a prepared cavity cemented or bonded in place to restore a decayed or broken

Malleability

The property of being shaped or formed under pressure without breaking.

Matrix

The binding substance that holds filler particles together, especially in a composite resin.

Onlay

A gold, porcelain, or resin filling that also covers one or more cusps of a tooth; used to restore a decayed or broken tooth.

Palladium (Pd)

A soft, silver-white, tarnish-resistant, naturally occurring metal related to platinum; considered a precious metal.

Platinum (Pt)

A silver-white precious metal that does not corrode in air.

Viscosity

The resistance of a material to flow.

Aesthetic Dentistry

Operative dentistry to emulate natural beauty; cosmetic dentistry.

Axial wall

Internal surface of a cavity preparation positioned parallel to the long axis of the tooth.

Bonding

Tooth-colored resin composite that is bonded, sculpted, hardened, and polished to tooth surfaces; usually used for aesthetic purposes.

Cavity wall

One of several walls of a cavity preparation.

Diastema

Space between two teeth; place where adjacent surfaces do not touch.

Line angle

Junction of two surfaces in a cavity preparation; cavity line angle.

Operative dentistry

Common term for restorative or aesthetic dentistry that restores decayed or defective teeth to proper form and function.

Outline form

The shape of the are or a cavity preparation.

Pulpal wall

The internal surface of a cavity preparation positioned perpendicular to the pulp of the tooth; the floor of the preparation.

Restoration

Measures taken to return a defective tooth to proper form and function with the use of a dental material.

Restorative Dentistry

Area of dentistry that restores decayed or defective teeth to proper form and function; an area of operative dentistry.

Retention form

The shape of a cavity preparation; designed to prevent displacement of the dental material.

Veneer

Ultrathin layer of composite resin or porcelain bonded to the facial surface of teeth.

Whitening

Process of brightening stained, discolored teeth with in-office or at-home systems.
