antimicrobial peptides
peptide antibiotics that provide defense against microbes and viruses by interacting with membranes of infectious agents and increasing their permeability. Human Antimicrobial peptides are members of either the α-defensin, β-defensin or cathelicidin families
cathelicidins
Family of cationic antimicrobial peptides.
defensins
Any of a family of cationic antimicrobial peptides of vertebrates with three disulfide bonds and a largely beta-sheet structure. Humans have α and β-defensins; some other mammals also have circular θ defensins. Cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide molecules also called defensins are found in insects and plants, although it is not known whether they are derived from a common ancestral gene.
Paneth cell
Specialized cell type of the epithelial layer of the small intestines. Paneth cells are localized to the base of the crypts of the intestines and secrete antimicrobial peptides.
