Spontaneous Generation

Non-binding objects can give rise to living organisms. Which was proposed by Aristotle in 4th century BC, but disproved later in 16th(Francesco Redi) and 18th(Louis Pasteur) century.

Scientific Method

Method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data is gathered, a hypothesis is formed from data, and then the hypothesis is tested.

Hypothesis

A tentative explanation for the observation based on previous knowledge, facts, and general principles. Includes "If" and "Then" in the statement.

Biosphere

The biological component of the Earth, which includes Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, and Atmosphere.

Ecosystem

A community of living organisms in conjuction with the nonliving components of their environment interacting as a system.

Community

Includes all the living components of a specific region.

Population

A group of organisms which belong to the same species that interbreed and live in the same geographical area.

Organisms

A living being

Organ System

A group of organs that work together to perform a certain task.

Organ

A collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common function.

Cell

Building blocks, the structural unit of life

Organelles

Within cells, which allow the cells to function properly.

Element

A substance that consists of just one type of atoms.

Isotopes

Different possible versions of each element.

Molecule

When two or more similar or different atoms join together chemically. H2 or CO(Carbon monoxide)

Compound

A molecule that contains at least two different elements. H2O or CO2 (Carbon dioxide)

Non-polar Covalent Bonds

Formed by two similar atoms

Polar Covalent Bonds

Formed by two dissimilar atoms

Hydrogen Bonds

Polar molecules such as water show particular positive and negative charges. The partial charges on a covalently bonded hydrogen atom attracts a different electronegative atom to form a hydrogen bond.

Metabolism

Energy, in the former of food, is transformed to maintain metabolic processes and for survival.

Osmoregulation

The process of regulating water potential in order to keep fluid and electrolyte balance within a cell or organism relative to the surrounding.

Adapting

Changing one's behavior to suit the circumstances

Organic Chemistry

Study of compounds containing Carbon. All organic/biological compounds contain Carbon and Hydrogen

Biochemistry

The study of chemical processes in living organisms

Essential Elements of life

Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, (C.H.O.N.), Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Sulfur

Energy levels of the shell

Orbitals form shells. Energy increases from inner shell towards outer shell. Electrons gain or lose energy when they jump from one level to another.
