Statistical infrequency

Mean,median and mode - descriptive statistics. Used to represent typical value in set of data. Define what is most common/normal -idea of what is not common/abnormal.

SI - Evaluation - Some abnormal behaviour is desirable

High IQ. Some normal behaviour also undesirable - depression relatively common. using statistical infrequency - unable to distinguish between desirable/undesirable.

SI - Evaluation - The cut-off point is subjectively determined

Difficult to decide where to separate normality from abnormality. Symptom of depression - difficulty sleeping. What counts as abnormal?

SI - Evaluation - Statistical infrequency is sometimes appropriate

Helps address what is normal in a statistical context. Makes a cut-off point in terms of diagnosis. Clear what is abnormal and what isn't. Not opinion - no bias.

Deviation from social norms

Norms created by group of people. Standards of acceptable behaviour set by social group. Anyone who behaves differently classed as abnormal. Some rules about unacceptable behaviour are implicit - other policed by laws.

DFSN - Evaluation - Susceptible to abuse

Social norms vary as times change. Definitions based on prevailing social morals and attitudes. Allows mental health professionals to classify mentally ill those who transgress against social norms.

DFSN - Evaluation - Deviance is related to context and degree

Not clear line between abnormal deviation and harmless eccentricity. Social deviance inevitably related to context and degree.

DFSN - Evaluation - There are some strengths

Distinguishes between desirable and undesirable behaviour. Takes into account effect that behaviour has on others. Abnormal behaviour - behaviour that damages others.
