Relative Atomic Mass

The weighted mean mass of an atom compared to 1/12th the mass of an atom of C-12.

Relative Isotopic Mass

The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of C-12.

Isotope

An atom of an element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.

First Ionistion Energy

The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions.

Atomic Orbital

A region around the nucleus that can hold up to two electrons with opposite spins.

Electronegativity

A measure of the attraction of a bonded atom for the pair of electrons in a covalent bond.

Hydrogen Bond

A strong dipole-dipole attraction between an electron-deficient H atom of -NH, -OH, or -HF on one molecule and a lone pair of electrons on a highly electronegative atom containing O, N, or F on a different molecule.

Acid

A species that releases H+ ions in aqueous solution.

Strong Acid

An acid which dissociates completely in aqueous solution.

Weak Acid

An acid which dissociates only partially in aqueous solution.

Base

A compound that neutralises an acid to form a salt.

Alkali

A type of base that dissolves in water forming OH- ions.

Salt

The product of a neutralisation reaction in which H+ ions from the acid are replaced by metal or ammonium ions.

Redox Reaction

A reaction involving reduction and oxidation.

Covalent Bond

The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms.

Water of Crystallisation

Water molecules that are bonded into a crystalline structure of a compound.

Ionic Bond

The electrostatic attraction between anions and cations.

Metallic Bond

The electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.

Enthalpy Change of Formation

The energy change to form 1 mole of a compound from its elements.

Enthalpy Change of Neutralisation

The energy change when an acid is neutralised by a base to form 1 mole of water.

Enthalpy Change of Combustion

The energy change when 1 mole of a compound reacts completely with oxygen.

Standard Conditions

1 atm, 298 K, 1 mol dm-3
